 What is Psoriasis vulgaris?
Psoriasis vulgaris is a common, chronic skin disorder characterized by scaly, silvery bumps and flaky patches of skin. Psoriasis vulgaris is caused by an abnormally high growth rate of skin cells that form these thick, dry scales. Although it is believed that the immune system has something to do with psoriasis outbreaks, the reason for this accelerated skin growth is unknown. Patches of the flaky, bumpy skin commonly appear on the scalp, back, knees, elbows and buttocks. In more severe cases, the affected skin and the joints can become inflamed and sore.

How to Manage Psoriasis vulgaris
In most cases, the treatment of psoriasis will be effective. However, the condition does tend to return and require new courses of therapy. Prescription creams and ointments are often used for mild-to-moderate psoriasis. In severe psoriasis, treatment may also include phototherapy and oral medications.

What to Expect
Currently there is no cure for psoriasis, and an important goal of the available treatment is to improve patient’s quality of life. Topical treatments are the first line defense in the treatment. Prescriptions products (cream, ointment, shampoo, foam, spray) are often used for mild-to-moderate psoriasis. In severe psoriasis, treatment may also include phototherapy, oral medications or biologicals.
Psoriasis usually goes through cycles and can appear anywhere on the body. Flare-ups can appear for weeks or months, then disappear for a while with no apparent symptoms. You may notice that your psoriasis improves in the summer months, when sunlight can help clear up the symptoms. Be careful: too much ultraviolet light can aggravate psoriasis and cause skin cancer, so always use caution and a sunscreen when going outside.
